The results are in: 2024 is a great year to start a business!

Watching the news you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s all still a bit grim when it comes to the economy. After all, gloom and doom makes for great headlines! However, while it’s true that a number of businesses have suffered over the last few years, there are plenty that have not only survived, but thrived, and that includes new businesses.

However, this is a lot more than just optimistic thinking or trying to have a positive mental attitude for the year ahead. The Geek Retreat franchise have actually commissioned their own research asking a sample of UK consumers and business owners to share their views on that state of the economy. If you believe the current climate makes it too difficult to start your own business, the results might surprise you:

• 15% of Brits have set up their own business in the past ten years, and of these, 44% did so in the last three years
• More women (52%) have started their own business in the past three years, compared to men (30%)
• Retail was the most popular sector, accounting for 19% of all new start-ups

Where some people saw a crisis, others saw an opportunity!

This is fascinating data, not just because it shows that so many people are finding success starting their own business, but also that the retail sector is still one of the most attractive and lucrative for new businesses.
